* GETTING STARTED WITH RED20 *
******************************
THE PURPOSE OF "GETTING STARTED WITH RED20" IS TO
INTRODUCE THE DEC FIELD SERVICE ENGINEER TO THE RED PACK.
AFTER READING THIS DOCUMENT HE WILL UNDERSTAND WHAT THE RED
PACK PRODUCT IS, WHEN A RED PACK IS USED AND WHAT SUPPORTING
DOCUMENTATION EXISTS AND WHERE TO FIND IT. THE INTENT OF
"GETTING STARTED WITH RED20" IS TO ACT AS A POINTER TO
TECHNICAL INFORMATION, DESCRIPTIONS AND PROCEDURES.
THE RED (RELIABILITY EXERCISER AND DIAGNOSTICS) PACK
IS A PRODUCT THAT WILL ONLY BE USED INTERNALLY TO DIGITAL
EQUIPMENT CORPORATION. DO NOT USE THE RED PACK AS AN
OPERATING SYSTEM FOR CUSTOMER SERVICES. IT IS CURRENTLY
												PAGE 2
USED ON ONLY DECSYSTEM 2020'S. THIS DISK PACK PROVIDES THE
FIELD SERVICE ENGINEER WITH A TOOL FOR THE INSTALLATION,
MAINTENANCE (BOTH REMOTE AND LOCAL) AND DIAGNOSIS OF THE
DECSYSTEM 2020. THE RED PACK CONSISTS OF UTILITY SOFTWARE
TO ESTABLISH A MINIMAL AND PREDICTABLE HARDWARE RELIABILITY
TEST.
THE FIRST TIME YOU WILL USE THE RED PACK IS WHEN YOU
INSTALL YOUR DECSYSTEM 2020 (REFERENCE THE KS10 BASED
DECSYSTEM-2020 INSTALLATION MANUAL). ALL THE DIAGNOSTICS
YOU WILL USE IN CHECKING THE SYSTEM, WILL COME FROM THE RED
PACK. AT SOME POINT IN TIME, YOU MIGHT NEED TO FORMAT A
PACK OR BUILD A RED PACK (REFERENCE APPENDICES I,II, AND III
OF THIS DOCUMENT). APPENDIX I SHOWS HOW TO FORMAT A DISK
PACK. APPENDIX II SHOWS HOW TO BUILD A RED BACK. APPENDIX
III SHOWS HOW TO CONFIGURE THE RED PACK TO THE SYSTEM.
AFTER YOU HAVE BUILT THE RED PACK IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO BACK
IT UP ON TAPE. THE DOCUMENT RED20.MEM SHOWS HOW TO BUILD A
BACKUP TAPE. RED20.MEM ALSO HAS A LOT OF USEFUL INFORMATION
THAT IS WORTHWHILE TO LOOK AT. WHEN YOU DECIDE TO RUN THE
HARDWARE RELIABILITY TEST (ACCEPTANCE) REFERENCE THE
DOCUMENT RED20.USR. THIS DOCUMENT SHOWS A SIMPLE STEP BY
STEP PROCEDURE ON HOW TO RUN THE HARDWARE RELIABILITY TEST.
RED20.USR ALSO SHOWS HOW TO CREATE DISK STUCTURES AND OTHER
ESSENTIAL INFORMATION. THE NEXT PARAGRAPH EXPLAINS HOW TO
GET THESE DOCUMENTS AND OTHER USEFUL DOCUMENTS .
THE SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION FOR THE RED PACK IS ALL
IN ONE AREA. IF YOU WANT TO HAVE EVERYTHING PRINT OUT THATS
AVAILABLE FOLLOW THESE STEPS.
1. LOGIN AS F-S
2. TYPE "DO DOCUMENTS" ( CR )
BE PREPARED FOR A LOT OF PAPER OUTPUT ON YOUR LINEPRINTER!!!!
THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS WILL BE PRINTED
1. RED20.HLP ( THIS DOCUMENT )
2. RED20.POL ( FIELD POLICY PROCEDURES FOR RED20 )
3. RED20.REV ( RED PACK REVISION CONTROL )
4. RED20.MEM ( RED PACK INTERNALS )
5. RED20.USR ( DESCRIPTION OF HARDWARE RELIABILTY TEST SYSTEM )
6. KSREF.MEM ( HARDWARE BIT DESCRIPTION )
7. REDIAG.HLP ( DIAGNOSTIC HELP FILE) INCLUDING DN22 EXAMPLES
8. REDCOM.MEM (IBM COMMUNICATIONS INFORMATION - DN22, DUP11, KMC ,IBMCON)
	      (REFERENCE FOR DN22 ACCEPTANCE PROCEDURES)
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PRINT OUT A CERTAIN DOCUMENT FOLLOW THESE STEPS.
1.LOGIN AS F-S
2.TYPE ENA ( CR )
3.PRINT<RED>RED20.MEM (OR ANY FILE THAT IS LISTED ABOVE) ( CR )

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE HARDWARE OF THE
DECSYSTEM 2020 READ KSREF.MEM. IT GIVES A GOOD EXPLANATION
OF WHAT'S HAPPENING DOWN TO THE BIT LEVEL. RED20.POL TELLS
YOU HOW TO ORDER THE RED TAPES THAT MAKE UP A RED PACK AND
FIELD POLICIES THAT ARE CONCERNED WITH THE RED PACK PRODUCT.
A DETAILED REVISION EXPLANATION OF THE RED PACK IS IN THE
DOCUMENT RED20.REV.
******************* PAGE 3
* RED 303 VS. 404 *
*******************

WHETHER YOU ARE READING THIS DOCUMENT FOR THE FIRST TIME OR AS AN
INTRODUCTION TO RED404, IT IS ADVISED YOU READ THIS DOCUMENT TO ITS
ENTIRETY. A LOT OF CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE NOT ONLY IN THE SOFTWARE
USED IN RED404 BUT IN THE STRUCTURE OF OUR DOCUMENTATION. IT IS OUR
INTENT TO PROVIDE IMPROVED DOCUMENTATION TO THE FIELD ,WHETHER THE
READER BE A NOVICE OR A 2020 HEAVY.

1. NEW MONITOR AND EXEC , MONITOR-SUPPORT PROGRAMS

	Highest visible change: SPEED-improvement !!
Nearly all Support programs are now running under SYSJOB .
	This includes:
	LPTSPL - the Lineprinter Spooler
MOUNTR - the handler for TAPE and STRUCTURE mounting
ORION - processes messages sent by OPR
QUASAR - the spooling system manager
INFO - the inter-job communication handler
	MAILER - Mail support
MAPPER - speedup thru mapping of common programs
FAL20 - Network File Access Support
STATUS - accumulating DISK and Tape transfer statistics
OPER20 - general cleanup and SYSERR-queing every day
	CDRIVE - Card Reader support
	SPRINT - Card Batch handler
*** Beware : This is the absolute maximum of load SYSJOB can handle

Communication and setup for all STRUCTURE , TAPE and QUEING is handled
by OPR , running under PTYCON

As a "priviledged" user , YOU can either attach to PTYCON on the CTY ,
or run OPR yourself ( multiple copies run , showing up as multiple
	"Operators" .

At startup of the RED404-system certain COMMAND-files control the
initial behaviour of these MONITOR-Support programs:

	<SYSTEM>SYSJOB.RUN	Sysjob-commands
	<SYSTEM>4-CONFIG.CMD	Configuration parameters ( TTY-Speeds ,Time-Zone
				LPT-type , Monitor-parameters )
	<SYSTEM>PTYCON.ATO	PTYCON-commands
	<SUBSYS>SYSTEM.CMD	OPR-commands
	<UETP.LIB>RELIAB.CMD	UETP-commands
	<UNSUPPORTED>NORCMD.CMD OPER20-commands

All "Configuration"-files for the RED404-System have been changed over
	to MIC-files.

This version of the EXEC supports "Macro Interpreted Commands (MIC)".
You run MIC by typing : "DO file-name parameter"

The end of a MIC-file will be signaled by:

"[MICEMF -End of MIC file: file-spec]
			 @KMIC"
Two words of caution: PAGE 4

	1. DON't type , until You see the END-message . Any type-in You do
will be merged with the type-in MIC does.
	2. The way to interrupt a MIC-file in progress is by typing :
			"Control B Control B" -- same as Control C Control C
		Result: [MIC is breaking]
	  followed by a "Control A Control A"
		Result: [MIC aborted]
			.......
This should never be necessary , since all MIC-files are delivered
	in two forms : a) SET a condition	b) Unset a condition

Since the handling of the QUEING system has been changed considerably
	we have delivered a "special" MIC-file <UETP.LIB>TS-DIAGNOSTICS

This file will build a DUMPER-tape , which can then be used to
build a <F-S> area on the customer's pack.

See file TS-Diagnosis for more details.

2.	NEW HARDWARE SUPPORTED (TU77/TM03 ,DN22)

TU77/TM03:	Release 4 (RED404) fully supports the addition of
the TU77. The diagnostics also support this addition.
DN22: Configuration procedures can be found in Appendix III
of this document. All other information (Diagnostic
and Acceptance Procedures ,etc.) are contained in
			REDCOM.MEM and REDIAG.HLP

3.	DOCUMENTATION UPDATES, CORRECTIONS AND ADDITIONS

A- KSREF.MEM has been corrected/updated to reflect the latest hardware
	    available on the system.
B- REDIAG.HLP has been created to give examples of diagnostic runs.
It should be noted that timing information is given in the examples
to give you a reference , how the distributed DIAGNOSTICS run on
a "healthy" system. Be aware , that the timing is a constraint of
	    system-hardware ( Memory size , Disk/tape/Lpt types etc.).
C- RED20.HLP has changed completely as to format and content do to
Release 4 software and the structure of RED404.
D- REDCOM.MEM created for COM hardware support.
	E- RED20.MEM changed to reflect TOPS20 RELEASE 4
	F- REDUSR.MEM changed to reflect TOPS20 RELEASE 4
Tidbits:

STATUS.EXE runs normally under sysjob-control ( see above ) and automatically
appends to <operator>MONITR.STS in 10 minute intervals. To get a snapshot on
Your terminal type: @STATUS <Carriage return>

All Command-files are kept at generation 1 . Be careful , that YOU don't by
mistake get them into higher generations !

The restriction on Magtape-length for UETP-testing has been removed. The
tapes are now tested in 1600 Bpi PE and 800 bpi NRZ . Be aware , that a 2400 ft
tape takes a long time per pass ( hours ).

<unsupported>SYSDPY.EXE is a rewrite of an old (TOPS10) friend , giving system-
status info on a display.-maybe an inroad for Software-support to see whatsgoing on.
