	MERGE
	-----

THE FORTRAN PROGRAM MERGE IS INTENDED TO SUPPLEMENT THE PROGRAM
SURVEY, ENABLING THE USER TO COMBINE SEVERAL DATA FILES INTO
ONE. RESPONDENTS TO A QUESTIONNAIRE MAY BE DIVIDED INTO SETS
IN ANY CONVENIENT MANNER AND A SEPARATE DATA FILE CREATED FOR
EACH SET. THESE FILES MAY THEN BE MERGED INTO ONE LARGE FILE
FOR SUBSEQUENT TABULATION OR ANALYSIS BY THE PROGRAMS SORTER
	AND CROSS.

      PROGRAM MERGE

      DESCRIPTION
THIS PROGRAM COMBINES UP TO 64 FILES OF RESPONSES TO THE SAME
	QUESTIONS BY DIFFERENT RESPONDENTS.

      SOURCE
NORMAN W. JOHNSON, DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS, WHEATON COLLEGE,
	NORTON, MASS.

      INSTRUCTIONS
EACH SET OF CODED RESPONSES TO THE QUESTIONS SHOULD BE WRITTEN
INTO AN ASCII DATA FILE BY THE PROGRAM SURVEY. THE ORDER OF THE
QUESTIONS SHOULD BE THE SAME IN EACH FILE, THOUGH IT IS PERMIS-
SIBLE FOR SOME FILES TO HAVE EXTRA QUESTIONS AT THE END.

THE PROGRAM WILL REQUEST THE NUMBER OF FILES TO BE MERGED AND
THEIR NAMES. THE NAME OF EACH FILE MAY BE ENTERED INDIVIDUALLY.
ALTERNATIVELY, INSTEAD OF ENTERING A FILE NAME, THE USER MAY
SIMPLY PRESS <RETURN>, IN WHICH CASE THE PROGRAM WILL ASSUME
THAT SUCCEEDING FILES ARE NAMED "SET1", "SET2", ETC. THE PRO-
GRAM WILL ALSO ASK FOR THE NAME (NOT MORE THAN 5 CHARACTERS)
THAT THE NEW DATA FILE IS TO HAVE AND FOR A DESCRIPTION OF THE
SURVEY (NOT MORE THAN 48 CHARACTERS).
